Light Therapy

What is IPL?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive light-based treatment that uses broad-spectrum pulses of light to target and improve a range of skin concerns. Unlike a true laser, which uses one focused wavelength, IPL releases multiple wavelengths of light, allowing it to treat pigmentation, redness, broken capillaries, sun damage, and overall skin tone in a single session.

During treatment, pulses of light are drawn to pigment (melanin) and blood vessels (haemoglobin) beneath the skin’s surface. This safely heats and breaks down unwanted pigmentation and vascular lesions while stimulating collagen production for smoother, clearer, and more even skin over time.

IPL Treatment Context

Benefits

  • Reduction of sun spots, age spots, and freckles
  • Treatment of redness, rosacea, and visible capillaries
  • Improved skin tone and clarity
  • Softer fine lines and improved skin texture
  • Overall rejuvenation and a brighter, more even complexion

IPL is suitable for the face, neck, chest, hands, and body. Most people experience mild warmth during treatment with little to no down time — making it a popular, effective option for busy lifestyles.

IPL Benefits

IPL vs. Laser

IPL is an excellent option for diffuse skin issues to achieve improvement in tone, redness, and pigmentation with minimal down time.

For deeper and more stubborn issues, we use our Excel V laser, which has deeper skin penetration. Your therapist will assess your skin to recommend the most effective treatment option.

IPL – FAQs

What is IPL?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive light-based treatment that uses broad-spectrum pulses of light to improve pigmentation, redness, broken capillaries, sun damage, and overall skin tone.

How does IPL work?

IPL emits multiple wavelengths of light that are absorbed by melanin (pigment) and haemoglobin (redness). This controlled heating breaks down unwanted pigmentation and vascular lesions while stimulating collagen production.

What concerns can IPL treat?
  • Sun spots, age spots, freckles
  • Redness, flushing, rosacea
  • Facial veins and broken capillaries
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Mild textural concerns and fine lines
What does IPL feel like?

Most people describe IPL as a quick, warm flick or light snap on the skin. The discomfort is mild and brief. Cooling gel helps keep the treatment comfortable.

How many treatments will I need?

A course of 3–6 sessions, spaced 3–4 weeks apart, is typical. The number depends on the condition being treated and your skin response.

Is there down time?

Down time is minimal. You may experience redness for a few hours and darkening of pigmentation (which flakes off over 7–14 days). Most people return to normal activities immediately.

How soon will I see results?

Improvements can be seen as early as 1–2 weeks, with continued benefits as pigmentation clears and collagen improves over the following months.

Who is not suitable for IPL?

You may not be suitable if you:

  • Have very dark skin (higher risk of pigmentation changes)
  • Have a recent tan (sun or fake tan)
  • Are pregnant
  • Are on photosensitising medications
  • Have an active skin infection
Is IPL the same as laser?

No. IPL uses broad-spectrum light for overall rejuvenation. Lasers use a single wavelength for greater precision on stubborn or deeper concerns.

Excel V – FAQs

What is the Cutera Excel V laser?

The Excel V is a medical-grade laser system that treats vascular concerns, redness, and pigmentation using two precise wavelengths—532 nm and 1064 nm. It targets unwanted blood vessels and pigmented lesions safely and effectively.

What conditions does Excel V treat?

Excel V can improve a wide range of vascular and pigment issues, including:

  • Facial redness & flushing
  • Rosacea
  • Broken capillaries (telangiectasia)
  • Spider veins
  • Port-wine stains
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Pigmented spots (sun spots, freckles, age spots)
  • Poikiloderma (sun-damaged neck/chest)
  • Acne scarring & post-inflammatory redness
How does the Excel V laser work?

Excel V delivers highly targeted laser energy into the skin, which is absorbed by:

  • Blood vessels (haemoglobin)
  • Pigmented lesions (melanin)

This controlled heating causes the vessel or pigment to collapse or break down, after which the body naturally clears it. The system also stimulates collagen production, improving overall skin tone and texture.

What areas can be treated?

Common treatment areas include: face, nose and cheeks, neck and chest, legs, hands, shoulders, and anywhere with redness, vessels, or pigmentation.

Is the Excel V laser painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as a quick, warm snap or pulse of heat. Excel V features sapphire contact cooling, which helps keep the skin comfortable throughout the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies depending on the concern:

  • Small vessels or single concern: 1–2 treatments
  • Rosacea or diffuse redness: 3–4 treatments
  • Leg veins: 2–3 treatments
Is there down time?

Down time is usually minimal. You may experience:

  • Temporary redness
  • Mild swelling
  • Darkening of treated pigment (lifting over 7–14 days)
  • Slight bruising (rare)

Most patients return to normal activities immediately.

How soon will I see results?

Many patients see improvement after the first session, especially for vessels and pigmentation. Results continue to improve over 4–12 weeks as the treated vessels fade and collagen forms.

Is Excel V safe for all skin types?

Excel V is safe for many skin types, including lighter to medium skin tones. Skin type will be evaluated prior to treatment to ensure safe, effective settings for your complexion.

Who is not suitable for Excel V?

You may not be suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have a recent tan (sun or fake tan)
  • Are on photosensitising medications
  • Have active infection or dermatitis in the area
  • Have very dark skin types (risk of pigmentation changes)
How should I prepare for treatment?

Before Excel V:

  • Avoid sun exposure/tanning for 4 weeks
  • Avoid retinoids or acids for 3–5 days
  • Stop waxing or plucking the treatment area
  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin
What aftercare is needed?

After treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure and use SPF 50
  • Avoid saunas, hot showers, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Use gentle skincare for a few days
  • Allow pigmentation to darken and naturally exfoliate — do not pick or scrub
How is Excel V different from IPL?

Excel V uses true laser wavelengths for highly targeted treatment of specific vessels and pigments. IPL uses broad-spectrum light that spreads across multiple chromophores, ideal for general skin brightening.

Excel V is more precise and powerful for stubborn vessels, redness, and pigmentation.

How much does Excel V cost?

Pricing depends on your individual needs. It ranges from:

  • Small area: $200–$250
  • Full face: $300–$500
  • Neck and chest: $200–$300
  • Leg veins: $300-$500 (depending on the extent of the veins)

Packages and multi-session discounts are often available when paid in full.

Skin Rejuvenation

Laser Genesis

Genesis is a laser treatment using a 1064-nm Nd:YAG wavelength laser that gently heats the skin, stimulating collagen production and improving the skin’s microvascular network.

This is effective for:

  • Fine lines and early wrinkles
  • Diffuse redness, rosacea, dilated capillaries, uneven tone
  • Enlarged pores and rough texture
  • Sun damage, mild scarring, general 'skin glow' rejuvenation effects

Suitable for all skin types (due to the wavelength and non-ablative nature) Genesis delivers micro-pulses of laser energy that gently heat the skin layers without damaging the skin surface. Treatment time is short (often 15–30 minutes) and there is minimal down time.

Patients may experience mild redness that resolves within hours. Genesis is typically performed as a series (eg, 3–6 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart) for optimal results.
