Symptoms of Pelvic Varicose Veins

Symptoms for pelvic varicose veins can vary. Checking off your symptoms is the first step to finding out the cause of chronic pelvic pain.

  • Chronic pelvic pain lasting more than 6 months
  • A dull, aching or heavy sensation in the pelvis
  • Pain that is worse after long periods of standing or sitting
  • Pain during or after sexual intercourse
  • Pain worsening before or during menstruation
  • Visible varicose veins around the vulva, buttocks or upper thighs
  • Sometimes associated leg varicose veins
  • Pain that worsens at the end of the day and improves when lying down

Diagnosis

How are pelvic varicose veins diagnosed?

Diagnosis starts with a clinical assessment and is confirmed with imaging.

  • Ultrasound, often transvaginal, to assess blood flow and vein size
  • MRI or CT scan to visualise pelvic veins
  • Venography, a minimally invasive X-ray procedure using dye injected into veins. This is the most accurate test and may be performed at the same time as treatment.

Diagnosis can take time because symptoms overlap with gynaecological, urological, colon and intestinal concerns. Many patients have already had investigations before symptomatic pelvic varicose veins are considered.
