Pelvic Varicose Veins Essentials
Pelvic varicose veins are enlarged pelvic veins that can contribute to ongoing pelvic pain. Learn the essentials, who is affected, and when specialist assessment may help.
What are pelvic varicose veins?
Pelvic varicose veins are a common but often under-recognised cause of chronic pelvic pain. In some people they may be completely asymptomatic and in others may be the cause of chronic pelvic pain.
When pelvic varicose veins cause pain symptoms, the term Pelvic Congestion Syndrome is sometimes used.
These are enlarged veins in the pelvis. Normally, valves keep blood flowing in one direction but when they fail, blood pools and stretches the veins. This is similar to varicose veins in the legs. The most commonly affected veins are the ovarian veins.

Who gets this condition?
It most commonly affects women aged 20-50, especially those who have had children. Hormonal factors, genetics and pregnancy can weaken vein walls and valves. Those who have had pelvic surgery or pelvic inflammatory disease may also be prone to pelvic varicose veins.
